Before proceeding, it’s important to understand the anatomy of the nail. The hard covering you refer to as the nail is composed of keratinized cells. The nail originates from the nail matrix, the nail extends over the nail bed, covering an intricate network of nerves and protecting them. New nail cells continue to be produced beneath the matrix, which is also responsible for growth and the structure you see. Understanding this anatomy brings the nail functions into proper perspective. Nails also go through a process known as nail proliferation, where specialized cells in the matrix constantly divide by pushing older cells outward or forward. The older cells then become keratinized and compact as they move outward, which is what you see as your nail plate. Blood and nutrition flow to the nails to keep them healthy.
Nail disorders are signs of underlying health problems with varying degrees of seriousness. It’s important to know the common ones and what they could imply.
Nail discoloration has many potential implications, ranging from minor injuries to the nail to more serious health conditions like melanoma.
You can experience nail yellowing if you often wear nail polish. But this discoloration could also mean serious health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, lung syndrome, yellow nail disease, and other nail infections.
White spots could result from injury, but they can also signify mineral deficiency, fungus infection, and heavy metal poisoning.
Blue nails or cyanosis occurs when your blood lacks oxygen, mostly because of cold temperatures.
Clubbing is when your nails appear swollen and wider than normal. Clubbing may result from chronic low blood oxygen levels, sometimes accompanied by congenital cyanotic heart disease and cystic fibrosis.
Spooning nails are when the middle of the nail is concave, like a spoon. Spooning nails are often a symptom of iron deficiency anemia or some liver conditions.
Brittle nails are when your nails become more fragile and seem thinner and more prone to breakage. Brittle nails are a common sign of thyroid problems and anemia, but they can also develop with age.
Nail pitting looks like small notches in the nail. Nail pitting is common in people with skin disorders like eczema and psoriasis. It occurs as small round depressions in the nails.
Ridges are lines or indents in the nail. Aside from aging, deep ridges in the nails could indicate vitamin deficiencies or diabetes. Vertical ridges may come with age, but deep, horizontal ones (called Beau’s lines) may indicate a serious condition.
This condition is called Onycholysis and may be caused by fungi, an injury, or certain nail products.
This condition is called paronychia, an infection of the skin surrounding the nail.
Sometimes, thin, red to reddish-brown lines may appear under the nails. They may be followed by yellow-green discharge. The condition is known as splinter hemorrhage and represents blood deposits under the nails, mostly from injury.
Nails can serve as indicators of systemic health, sometimes reflecting the exposure to certain chemicals found in certain nail products. Chemicals like formaldehyde, toluene, dibutyl, and phthalate (all excluded from 21-free nail polish) have been linked to adverse health effects. Limiting your exposure to these harmful chemicals and monitoring your nail health can provide insight into potential chemical exposures.
Some nail conditions can reflect nutritional deficiencies. For example, brittle nails may indicate iron deficiencies, while a lack of calcium and zinc can cause white spots and ridges in the nails.
The following tips can help you maintain healthy nails.
These include avoiding harsh chemicals, trimming the nails, keeping them clean, and moisturizing. Always eat a balanced diet rich in protein, iron, zinc, and essential vitamins.
As mentioned previously, a balanced diet is crucial. Protein, iron, biotin, and vitamins A, C, and E are some of the key nutrients your diet should target.
It’s best to seek medical attention if you have persistent discoloration, discharge, and pain. It’s also advisable to speak with a doctor if you experience recurring infections.

]]>Before we dive into why it’s a popular nail polish color, we thought it would be a nice nod to history to mention that black was a color worn by the royals and the elite. In ancient Egypt, black was always seen as a color of power and strength, and because of that, black nail polish has become a statement color for fashion-forward thinkers.
However, one of the main reasons black nail polish is so popular is because it’s so versatile. It can be used as a chic, minimalist vibe or can be completely switched up to give more of an edgy feel. And it’s a color that goes with everything, so if you constantly switch up your wardrobe, your nails will always look flawless.
The great thing about black nail polish is that there are so many things you can do with it. Sure, you can wear it straight out of the bottle and still have an incredible-looking manicure, but what else could you do with it?
Choosing a matte finish with your black nail polish adds depth to your manicure, especially if you choose to paint your base with a matte black and then add glossy details on the top.
Glossy black nail polish can be paired with matte polish, or it can be worn alone to give an almost glassy black look to your manicure.
Every girl loves a good sparkle on their nails, and black isn’t an exception. Whether it’s a solid black with a sparkly finishing coat or it’s paired with other colors, it always looks sensational.
The great thing about black nail polish is that it doesn’t have to be worn on its own as a solid color, as it can be paired with neutrals, pastels, or even neon colors for an incredible finish.
In short, yes. It doesn’t matter what kind of skin tone you have! If you’ve got fairer skin, black nail polish can create a striking contrast and stand out. But, if you’ve got a darker complexion, you can also use black nail polish to get that perfect sleek look. Pair that with a monochromatic top layer and you’ll be rocking the day like Rhianna.
While black is an extremely popular color when it comes to nail polish, some people are put off by the fact it can leave their nails and skin stained. So what’s the best way of applying black nail polish to avoid this from happening?
The first thing you need to do when applying black nail polish is to find a quality base coat. This will help prevent the black from staining your nails and also create a smoother application. You could use our Double Star base and top coat to help you get the perfect base and finish.
Once you’ve applied a few layers, seal everything in with a decent top coat. This will help prevent your nails from chipping. If you do want a shiny finish, consider finishing with our Shine On protective high gloss finish.
If it’s time to remove your nail polish, it’s important to remove it correctly. Instead of using a toxic acetone-based remover, try out our gentle Time for a Change nail polish remover.
Here are a few ideas to inspire your Valentine’s Day Manicure.
]]>If you’re still waiting on Cupid’s strike, perhaps an Ace of Hearts manicure design will help attract that special someone. After all, finding the perfect love has a hint of luck in it, and you just might feel lucky this year with this nail design. Go for classic red nail polish, like Looker, and create tiny heart designs that mimic a deck of cards.
Why not try an artsy, hearty design? Maintain a playful twist by creating tiny hearts on your nails. And since you want to be playful, consider using a natural, nude color for your background and alternate pinks like Joyful Heart and Chroma for simple and tiny hearts.
There’s nothing wrong with going bold and simple this year, especially if you prefer a cleaner and more sophisticated look without extra designs. You can go with simple, solid colors, and there are loads of options to pick from. For example, you can choose a deep red to pull off an elegant look or go bold with something more Nude. Consider experimenting with a Darling shade to create a ‘chic’ appeal while looking elegant.
You probably know that red and pink have become the unofficial Valentine’s Day and February nail colors. So, spice up your nails by combining these two colors or alternating between them to create a cute design theme. For example, you can go for a pink or red layer at the tip of your French manicure instead of the traditional white tip. Use a red color shade like Arrival to add a touch of delicateness to the design.
Hearts are the number one shape for the Valentine, and you can incorporate them into your nail design without doing too much. Pick a solid white nail background color and paint one mini heart on each nail, close to your cuticles. For better contrast (and since red is the color of the season), go for any shade of red on a brighter or lighter background. White, for example, can do the trick, especially if you opt for a Light Worker shade. But you can use any other lighter color you prefer.
Regardless of what combo you use, please choose a non-toxic nail polish without any dangerous chemicals. You want to look good for Valentine’s Day, but you want to feel good as well.
Regardless of the manicure trend, design, or theme you want to use, it’s best to use non-toxic nail polish so you don’t expose yourself to dangerous chemicals. Liberation Nails is well-stocked with vegan, long-wearing options, free from mutagens, carcinogens, phthalates, parabens, and other toxic ingredients. Plus, there are nail polish options available in almost any color and shade you can imagine.
]]>In 2024, nail art is going to be less and less common. As much as we can love artistic manicures, the maximalist vibe is not as popular as it was in the beginning of 2023. We need something easy and simple rather than a stacked, bedazzled manicure, so we're looking at things like French tips and dotted florals for 2024.
An exciting trend for spring 2024 is metallic nails. Chrome nails have been big on the runway, and metallic is coming around again this year. People can go as sheer as they would like with their nails, or they can go for a glazed donut look. For a fun shimmery silver, check out Disco Salvation.
Who doesn't love a good French manicure? French tips are always going to stay in style, but you can see a twist on the modern take of that traditional look. Micro French tips are a minimalist stream. You can add visual interest or a little bit of color to any length of nail, and instead of having a thicker tip, you create a skinny line at the tip of the nail with your chosen color. Make it even more interesting by using a color like Blackbird or Temple on the tip.
On the subject of French tips, we're also looking at naked ones. French manicures have made a real surge over the last year, which means that 2024 is going to be full of naked French tips everywhere, in every nail salon. It makes it look like the nail is as natural as possible while covering any imperfections. That mix of diffused French and your natural nails is going to look fantastic in the new year. Use one coat of a neutral color like Darling for the base and a soft white for the tip like Lightworker to achieve this muted pretty manicure look.
While you may not want the bedazzled look, junk nails are really making a big comeback. It's a captivating infusion of 3D elements like beads, glitter, and rhinestones to create eccentric nail art. It's a fusion of vibrant hues like Chroma, Sunroom and Arrival, and it's going to make a big difference to the way that your nails look this year.
You may have seen nail stickers before, but rhinestones on a sheer shimmery base in the form of crystal decals makes a big difference for a bolder look. It's simple but stunning, and it's an ethereal look that's often inspired by mermaids. Mermaidcore for beauty and makeup is not going anywhere, so instead it's infiltrating the nail art world. Use a color like Disco Salvation to achieve this look.
Fresh pastel nails are not going anywhere, but orange ice is making a huge debut this year. It's a brighter, more tangerine looking hue that evokes that chilled creamsicle or ripe cantaloupe color like Goodyear. It's a warm, bright color and makes a big difference to how your nails look and make you feel. There are plenty of spring looks that pair well with those fresh pastels, but those brighter oranges are really coming through.
Lastly, another trend for 2024 is exactly what you want to see: geometric shapes. We've seen this in nail design for years now, but we're looking at a return to geometrics this year. Graphic patterns with squiggles and waves are always going to be popular, and you're going to see them ramp up among nail salons around the world.
Keep on top of the 2024 trends, and you’ll feel that color hit you’ve been looking for.
We also love our nails because they allow us to express ourselves through color. Liberation Nails offers non-toxic nail polish with bold, long-lasting colors for children and adults.

]]>You might have seen many beauty blogs discuss makeup and how facial skin must be well-prepped before any application. It is the same for your nails before any polish application. It is the foundational step that ensures a long-lasting nail polish you will be happy to see on your fingers and toes. A proper foundation involves shaping and filing your nails before the polish application begins. As part of the preparation method, it’s important to cleanse, moisturize, buff, and smooth your nails, as highlighted below:
Your nail polish will look dull and far from glamorous if you fail to remove any old application on the nail bed. Nail polish doesn’t adhere to an oily nail bed so it’s also important to cleanse well before applying your nail polish to ensure you have removed all the oil from your nails.
The buffer is used to smooth out your nails’ surfaces and to get rid of any irregularities that might have been caused by filing the edges. This is the main thing that provides a better canvas for the nail polish application. However, do not get too excited with buffing because it can weaken the nail bed if done excessively. People who over-buffer say it makes the nails’ surface extra sensitive and uncomfortable.
Usually, you would choose your concealer, foundation, and loose face powder based on your skin tone and quality. The same principle applies to your nails, especially when choosing the right nail polish. You must consider the nature of your nails and their sensitivity to help you choose the right nail polish. It is one essential way to achieve long-lasting results. Admittedly, not all nail polish is created equal, so you must know what you’re looking for, and particularly something you wouldn’t react to. For example, formaldehyde resin is a chemical you may want to avoid in nail polish because of the increased reaction risk.
You will find long-lasting nail polish with a little internet search. The first tip is to look for certain inscriptions like ‘long-lasting’ and ‘no chip’ on the product labels. Sometimes, nail polish with the ‘gel’ inscription makes better finishes and has some of the best-staying power. Read online reviews about your desired product if unsure about the formula and its staying power. It pays to be better safe than sorry.
A base coat acts as a protective barrier between your nail and the polish. More importantly, it is applied to further strengthen the nail’s surface and provide a better hold for the nail polish. A good base coat helps prevent staining and chipping during the nail polish application.
Have you ever tried applying nail polish to have it running all over your fingers? It never seems confined to the nail’s corners as the beauty studio does. The first thing that comes to mind is mastery and finesse. Beauty studios have the experience, skill, and right training to create beautiful nails. However, that shouldn’t deter you from mastering the art of applying nail polish. Here are some ways to master the technique.
Start the application with a thin, even layer to avoid smudging. You risk creating surface bubbles when you begin the application with thick spreads. It takes fluid hand and wrist movements to get this right, but as the saying goes, practice makes perfect.
Do you usually apply your nail polish on the surface in long strokes only? If yes, it may be why they end up chipping in no time. The recommended way is to seal the edges of your nails, including the tips. Carefully swipe the polish brush along your nail’s edges and the tips with fluid movements to get even spreads on these areas. Don’t worry; you’ll get a hang of it quickly.
The top coat is usually a high-quality nail polish to add extra shine and strength to your done and colored nails. The tip is to reapply the top coat every few days to maintain the glossy and fresh appearance of your nails. Add our Dry + Dash Instant Drying Drops for quick, no-smudge protection.

Nail polish is small enough to fit in any stocking, and it’s sure to put a smile on your loved one’s face. Holiday-themed nail polish is always a hit, but showing that you remember a person’s favorite color, whether it’s purple (like 4th Dimension) or black (like Blackbird), can make someone you love feel special.
And remember, non-toxic, healthy nail care isn’t just about nail polish. Our non-toxic nail polish remover, Time for a Change, and cuticle recovery oil, In Good Hands, also make excellent Christmas stocking surprises.
Many people think bold when they think of nail polish. But you probably have a friend or two that prefers something a little more subtle. For natural tones, consider Temple or Darling. Temple is a soft, ultra-flattering brown, while Darling is a cool, understated pink.
Not sure which colors are considered minimalist? Lean towards neutral colors like nude, brown, black or white.
If the answer is yes, then they’ll want the most fabulous holiday colors. You can’t go wrong with Disco Salvation and Looker. Disco Salvation looks like crushed diamonds in a bottle, perfect for New Year's Eve nails, and Looker is a classic shade of crimson. The holiday collection also includes Victoria Forever, a brown-mauve for those who prefer neutral tones but still want to show off their festive side.

Non-toxic nail polish can be the perfect gift for them. Let’s face it, it can be hard to rule out all of the potentially bad practices companies can get up to, so it’s worth holding onto them when you find them.

This list includes some of the carcinogens, mutagens, and other potentially harmful elements so often found in the beauty world, including in nail polish.

What it takes to have healthy, natural nails can be condensed into the following steps:
This nail care regimen echoes the recent advice found on Self.com, Camila Coelho, and our own website.
In our article on the pros of choosing non-toxic nail care products, we discuss the advantages of avoiding acetone and gel polish and committing to the healthier, greener alternatives offered by our 21-free nail care company. The non-toxic nail care routine is not very different from a typical nail care routine; it just involves making healthier product choices.
The chemicals you use in your nail products affect your health and the health of our planet. You’ll find 3, 5, 8, and 10-free nail polish on most cosmetic store shelves. These nail polishes are free of some of the harmful chemicals typically found in nail care products, like parabens, formaldehyde, and toluene. These chemicals are known to cause pollution and health problems, and many have already been banned in Europe.
Liberation Nails offers 21-free nail polish, meaning we refuse to incorporate twenty-one toxic or harmful substances in our products. For a complete list of the ingredients we avoid, click here.
Find an allergen-free hand moisturizer. Like those found in tubs, the heavier weight creams tend to lock in moisture best. Pay special attention to your cuticles by incorporating cuticle recovery oil into your regular nail care routine.
Our award-winning In Good Hands cuticle oil is non-toxic and vegan and made with natural ingredients that are intensely moisturizing, like avocado and apricot oils.
One of the most important things you can do in your nail care regimen is replace your nail file every few months or when the grit is becoming noticeably worn.
If you use cuticle oil daily (which we recommend for the best effect), chances are you won’t use the bottle before it expires. However, keep an eye on your nail products and the labeled expiration dates to ensure you always use fresh, effective products.
It’s essential to wear gloves when cleaning and during the winter. Whether you use natural cleaners or more potent chemicals, scrubbing can take a toll on the skin–especially when washing dishes. The same is true of winter weather. Cold wind can cause dry, chapped skin and more fragile nails.
Wearing gloves when you know you’ll be exposing your hands to harsh conditions can make a significant impact on your overall nail health.
It’s so tempting to saw back and forth when filing nails, but filing in one direction prevents splitting. The shape of your nail matters, too. An oval shape will give your nails the most strength.
Gel nail polish takes a significant toll on fingernail health. There is no breathability, and it takes a massive amount of harsh acetone to remove the polish, resulting in weaker nails. Nail professionals recommend taking breaks between gel manicures to give your nails a chance to recover.
If you use a non-toxic nail polish that is gentler and more breathable, then you don’t need to take breaks or use acetone to remove the polish. Our Time for a Change nail polish remover uses ingredients like Frankincense and Abyssinian oil to nourish nails while removing polish.
Nails may be small, but how you take care of them matters. If your skin and cuticles become dry and cracked, the experience is painful and leaves you vulnerable to infection. Keeping your nails clean and moisturized keeps them strong, and using products with healthy, eco-friendly ingredients keeps you healthy.
We also love our nails because they allow us to express ourselves through color. Be discerning about the type of nail polish you use. Liberation Nails offers non-toxic nail polish with bold, long-lasting colors for children and adults.

]]>You’ve probably heard of 5-free, 10-free, and even 15-free nail polish brands. These nail polish brands promise to exclude harmful ingredients like formaldehyde, toluene, dibutyl phthalate, parabens, camphor, and cyclic silicones. These chemicals have been tested and shown to cause allergic reactions, irritation, and even cancer.
Reactions to these chemicals depend on dosage and sensitivity, but we say: Why take the chance? It’s possible to make beautiful, high-quality nail polish without these additives, so we did.
In fact, we went the extra mile by keeping our non-toxic nail polish free of xylene, triphenyl phosphate, hydroquinone, bismuth oxychloride, animal derivatives, and more. Liberation Nails makes 21-free nail polish that is safe for everyone, especially children and expecting mothers.
For a list of the twenty-one ingredients Liberation Nails does not put in their nail polish, click here.
Poison Control posted an informative article concerning manicures and pregnancy. They cite formaldehyde, toluene, and plasticizers as harmful substances but say that the occasional application of nail polish in well-ventilated areas should be safe for both mom and baby.
They also note that women concerned about nail polish toxicity should consider “x-free” nail polish brands that “do not contain these potentially worrisome chemicals.”
Because Liberation Nails doesn’t use harmful chemicals, you don’t have to stress about ventilation to avoid breathing in toxins during your manicure. In fact, we went to extra lengths to ensure our nail polish doesn’t just lack the chemical smell—it smells good.
Sensitivity to smell is an issue that plagues many pregnant women, and the harsh chemical smell from most nail polish has been known to trigger headaches and nausea, especially in the first trimester. The after-polish aroma from Liberation Nails smells like lemon, coconut milk, and vanilla.
When you use a non-toxic nail product, you get non-toxic smells.
Bring your own nail polish to the salon for a manicure or pedicure. You are allowed to do this, and while you won’t receive any discount for bringing your own products, you’ll know the nail polish is high-quality and safe for you and your growing baby.
Take extra precautions to ensure the salon of your choice is up to code, clean, and following all sterilization protocols to prevent bacterial illness or infection. Once you find a nail salon you trust, it’s time to relax, be pampered, and let someone else try to paint those hard-to-reach toenails.
Most health professionals recommend skipping gel and acrylic nails during pregnancy because they require so much acetone for removal. Not only are the chemicals and fumes a problem, but the formula may weaken nails and dry out cuticles that are already experiencing changes due to pregnancy hormones.
None of this is a problem when using the non-toxic nail care product line by Liberation Nails. Our 21-free nail polish, hydrating nail polish remover, and award-winning cuticle oil offer a healthier alternative to traditional nail care.
Some women get better nails, skin, and hair during pregnancy. Others have the opposite experience. Our non-toxic and 21-free nail products ensure you don’t put any extra stress on your changing body.
Liberation Nails wants to keep people healthy, and we want to keep the Earth healthy, too. We incorporate recyclable and reusable materials whenever possible through glass bottles, refillable dispensers, and compostable packaging. Fewer chemicals in nail polish, nail polish remover, and other nail care items like instant drying drops mean fewer chemicals reaching our precious natural resources.
Our products are certified cruelty-free, and we value inclusivity.
Using 21-free nail polish by Liberation Nails is a small step you can take to make this big world a little more welcoming for your new arrival.
Choose from a variety of 21-free nail polish shades in our online store. Liberation Nails has something for everyone at every age and every stage of life.
]]>Your child, whether five or fifteen, is trying to figure out their own personal style. You may find your son or daughter is experimenting with fashion as a way to express themselves.
This journey of self-discovery starts early, and you can choose to help your child navigate this path with a cleaner line of products.
You may be wondering if nail polish really makes a difference. Keep reading to find out how something so small can impact your child’s confidence.
Kids are always being told what to do and what not to do. Choosing nail polish may seem like a minor decision to us, but have you ever offered M&Ms or gummy bears to a three-year-old? They will spend five minutes choosing which one to eat.
They act as if it’s the most important decision they’ve ever made—because it is.
In a world run by adults, offering your child the chance to choose a treat, pick their clothes, or decide which direction to go for on a walk, and—yes—choosing a nail polish color means the world to them. As a recent Astral Academy newsletter points out, even small decisions will teach your child abilities, like accountability, independence, and confidence, that will benefit them later in life.
We have eight different nail polish colors designed just for kids in our online store, so they will have plenty–but not too many–to choose from.
We’ve discussed how nail color can help adults express themselves and affect mood. You can pass this wisdom on to your children. If your son or daughter needs a mood boost, they may enjoy the hot pink Bright Light or the sunny yellow High Spirits.
Libbi Kids includes all the colors of the rainbow—and we have yet to meet a kid who wouldn’t adore a rainbow manicure.
Nail polish is an art form. Let your child decide which bold shade represents their feelings.
Letting your child make a choice demonstrates trust. An Upbility article describes the importance of parents when fostering healthy self-esteem and how this requires a balance of support and independence.
If your child is young, this can be as simple as choosing the nail color. If they are older, this could translate to letting them paint their own nails. Remember that support is critical. If they mess up, use it as an opportunity to teach the value of determination and learning from mistakes. Trust them to learn from their mistakes.
Take it a step further by inviting your child to paint your nails.
Libbi Kids is a non-toxic line of children’s nail polish, so even if the nail polish isn’t mess-free, it is worry-free.
Mom Junction has an excellent article on how to know when the time is right to paint your child’s nails. The two main pieces of advice are: 1) wait until they’re done sucking on thumbs and fingers, and 2) use non-toxic nail polish. Kids are usually done sticking their hands in their mouths between the ages of two and four.
Libbi Kids nail polish by Liberation Nails is designed for smaller hands and comes in a variety of vibrant, kid-friendly colors. As with all our nail polish, Libbi Kids is vegan, cruelty-free, 21-free, and sustainable.
Of course, it’s extra special when your child is old enough to be an involved participant in the manicure or pedicure. It’s one reason we developed the Big-Little Bundle. Get a discount on one adult nail polish and one children’s nail polish, and let the bonding (and self-expression) begin!

]]>Don’t underestimate the power of a non-toxic nail routine when looking to improve self-esteem or the impact you make in the world. Your nails could be the key to an easy mental boost — and maybe even a personal transformation.
It’s what’s on the inside that counts — but make sure the outside reflects those unique qualities, even if it’s in a small way. Showing your nails some love is an excellent opportunity to make an understated impression on others and remind yourself how beautiful you are whenever your fingers or toes come into view.
Notice that we’re focusing on nail care and not necessarily nail polish. We want you to take care of your nails before painting them.
Our In Good Hands Cuticle Recovery Oil is made with avocado, cottonseed, pomegranate, apricot kernel, and acai fruit oils. Besides smelling amazing, it’s also easy to use; just massage a small amount onto your cuticles daily.
This all-natural, nourishing cuticle oil won the 2022 Innovation Award for nail product of the year. Treat yourself to a small indulgence that takes just a moment of your time and will leave you feeling fantastic.
Moisturizing your nails allows you to take a tiny step to start feeling more confident immediately. Believe it or not, nail color offers the same opportunity.
There is an interesting trend in the mani-pedi world: accent nails. It is perfectly acceptable to paint just one or two nails and call your nail makeover a success. You really can do something as small as painting one nail to remind yourself that you are worthy of some color in your life.
With nail polish, it doesn’t have to be “Go big or go home.” It can be, “Go small, and feel great.”
Did you know that there is an entire field of study called Color Psychology? It theorizes that the colors you surround yourself with impact your attitude. (See our article on how color affects mood.)
For example, red might communicate passion to your subconscious, while blue has a calming effect, and purple can boost creativity. Whether you believe in color psychology or not, some nail colors probably make you feel happier than others.

]]>But you probably don’t need Sir Isaac Newton or Carl Jung to tell you that different colors make you feel different things. Isn’t that why everyone has a favorite color? You have one that makes you feel happy, calm, or bold — maybe even a color that makes you feel the opposite.
Liberation Nails has bright, vibrant colors as well as muted nudes and pastels, so we can keep everyone in our non-toxic nail squad happy. So, let's explore how nail color can affect your mood based on the different colors.
Do you want to feel calm? Maybe powerful? Actual change comes from within, but a change in nail color can help get you started.
If you want to feel bold, dangerous, and flirtatious, the London Image Institute recommends red. The experts at LII are careful to mention that a little goes a long way when it comes to this bold color choice. What better place to add that pop of color than on your nails?
Liberation Nails has two shades of red nail polish: the cool-toned Looker and punchy Arrival.
Ditch the negativity and take the first step to feeling joyful and optimistic by painting your nails bright, sunshiny yellow. Oberlo points out that popular brands like IKEA and Ferrari use yellow in their logos. After all, what could create a summertime feeling better than a fast car or fresh home décor?
Liberation Nails has two shades of yellow nail polish: the bright Sunroom and golden-hued Golden Hour.
Green can help you feel more connected to the natural world. Of course, the color sometimes evokes feelings of jealousy, so if you’re trying to get over an ex, you might want to opt for something else. The website ColorPsychology.org describes green as promoting healing and relaxation. After all, green spaces are usually where we find all our basic necessities: food, water, and shelter.
Liberation Nails has three shades of green nail polish: the soft Self-Soothe, cool Earth Sign, and deeper Crowdfund.
If you need calm, soothing energy in your life, then choose a light blue nail color. Very Well Mind points out that people are more productive when working in painted blue rooms. The color blue can invoke a calming, relaxing feeling, and instill a sense of reliability. The next time you need some help staying calm and focused, paint your nails a shade of blue and reap the benefits.
Liberation Nails has three shades of blue nail polish: pastel Infinite Ceiling, cool Indigo Child, and periwinkle Surrender.
There is more than one way to be bold, and if you need an extra push to bring out your creative side, purple is an excellent choice. Light purple can also have a calming effect similar to light blue. Inspiration is Purple describes the color as a true mix of red and blue: powerful and calming, allowing creativity to flow.
Liberation Nails has one shade of purple nail polish: the bold and beautiful 4th Dimension.
There are plenty of nail polish colors we didn’t get to mention here. You could choose Gilded Mystic (gold) for success, Astrologic (gray) for balance, and Joyful Heart (pink) for playfulness. Ultimately, the perfect nail color choice will always be what makes you feel good.
When you purchase nail color from Liberation Nails, you’ll keep feeling good for a long time, thanks to our 21-free, vegan formula. We refuse to put harmful components in our nail polish and never test on animals.
The Earth will thank you, too. Because we use as many natural ingredients as possible, Liberation Nails doesn’t harm the environment with harmful chemicals like parabens and phthalates. We use sustainable packaging whenever possible (Check out our refillable nail polish remover!).
Liberation Nails has more than twenty-five shades, plus another eight colors designed just for kids! You can easily find a color to help you affect your mood. And, if you have trouble choosing just one color, you can always save on three or more with a bundle.

]]>One of these 2023 spring nail trends is sure to resonate with you and help set the tone for an unforgettable season.
According to Nailpro, Pantone’s color of the year for 2023 is Viva Magenta. It’s a powerful, optimistic color that tells the world you’re not afraid to go for it — whatever your “it” might be.
Liberation Nails has their own exciting shade of magenta called The Fave. Be bold and wear this super-rich berry shade to the next spring gathering.
There’s nothing wrong with embracing tradition and choosing a lovely pastel. These light colors are a timeless spring trend and will match lighter outfits of the season. Choose a single shade, or spice things up a bit by alternating nail colors.
Liberation Nails offers beautiful shades, like Infinite Ceiling (pastel blue), 4th Dimension (pastel purple), and Self-Soothe (pastel green).
Go for a modern take on the French manicure with bright, colorful nail tips. Paint them sunshine yellow with Golden Hour, bold teal with Future Surf, or blood orange with Better Mood, all from Liberation Nails.
Save when you buy all three! (And don’t forget the glossy top coat.)
As Elle Magazine explains, negative space manicures incorporate your natural nail in the artwork. Many optical illusions rely on negative space; wouldn’t it be fun to have something like that on your nails? The best part is that you can surround that negative space with any color you like.
Deeper shades like Indigo Child (blue) or Victoria Forever (brown-mauve) would be great for this quirky and artistic spring trend.
By incorporating blossoms and greenery into your manicure. Everyone will know you’re ready for spring, and you’ll get a happy little serotonin boost every time you glance down at your manicure.
Use Arrival for delicate red roses or 4th Dimension for Lilacs. Earth Sign is the perfect shade of green for leaves and vines.
Nudes are always on trend, but they are a perfect way to step up chic style for spring. For example, nude ombre nails are subtle yet beautiful, and they also reference the popular glazed donut nail trend from last year. A nude background with one or two design elements is a great way to express individualism.
Experiment with nude nails this spring using the light pink Darling or flattering brown Temple shades from Liberation Nails.
You’re probably thinking: Excuse me, what? How can black possibly be in a 2023 Spring Nail Trends article? We’ll go back to the “do what makes you happy” mantra. Doing the unexpected and standing out in a crowd brings many people joy, and that kind of confidence is on trend every spring.
Blackbird is the nail polish for you.
The nail trend we’re really in love with this year is the one that will keep you healthy: non-toxic nail care.
Liberation Nails refuses to include twenty-one harmful or potentially harmful ingredients in their nail polish and nail care products. Founder Staci Morris believed there had to be a better alternative — and she was right!
All our nail polish uses natural ingredients meant to nourish your nails, like Baobab Oil, Kukui Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, and Violet Extract. Even our nail polish remover is vitamin-infused and acetone-free.
Our packaging is sustainable, and our nail products are vegan, cruelty-free, and inclusive. We want everyone to use our products and make our world and the people in it healthier. This movement isn’t just limited to adults; be sure to check out Libbi Kids, our line of non-toxic nail polish designed just for the next generation.
Choose the 2023 spring nail trend that will make your season a little brighter. Whether that involves spring flowers, a darker palette, or something with a pop of color, the most important thing is that you choose something you love — and choose a nail polish that loves you back.

]]>No matter your answer, Liberation Nails has a non-toxic spring nail color for you.
If you’re tired of the winter cold (and how it feels like 10 pm before dinner), we know you’re craving a bright, warm, uplifting color. Sunroom by Liberation Nails will give you sunshine even during April showers.
Instead of that horrible chemical smell you get with most nail polish, Sunroom is infused with lemon, coconut milk, and vanilla. As with every Liberation Nails product, you can rest assured this lemon-yellow nail polish is vegan and non-toxic.
Tulips, pansies, and peonies — oh my! Your favorite thing about spring is the blooms that pop up to let you know winter is almost over. Take a few bright petals wherever you go when you wear Joyful Heart by Liberation Nails.
This muted-pink nail polish is cruelty-free and made without harmful chemicals like parabens, phthalates, carcinogens, and mutagens.
Do you love picnicking and cloud gazing? Until now, it’s been too cold, wet, or snowy to lie on a blanket and appreciate the art of an endless blue sky. Luckily, spring means you can once again look up without freezing your face. We’re here for it — and so is Infinite Ceiling by Liberation Nails.
This minty shade of blue is a classic spring nail color, reminiscent of a robin’s egg or clear skies. For nail polish with a fresh scent, no toxins, and spring vibes, choose Infinite Ceiling.
If you love the smell of fresh-cut grass and the sound of leaves rustling in the breeze, consider making Earth Sign your spring shade. Every time you look down at your nails, you’ll remember that warm weather and budding trees are just outside your door.
We’ve mentioned our nail polish’s non-toxic and vegan properties, but let’s take a moment to discuss what we do put in this rich, green nail polish. Kukui oil boosts nail growth, baobab oil strengthens nails, evening primrose oil gives the polish its shine, and violet extract oil keeps your nails hydrated.
Is the sky blue because it reflects the water, or is the water blue because it reflects the sky? Either way, we know the periwinkle color that reflects on a pond at sunset is gorgeous — both in nature and in our nail polish. If a warm evening by the lake sounds like your idea of the perfect spring adventure, you might just love Surrender by Liberation Nails.
You never have to worry about your beauty regimen hurting your body or our planet when you choose Liberation Nails. We use a multitude of natural ingredients and avoid those that don’t coincide with our mission statement: to use color as a catalyst for personal transformation, individual expression, and joyful liberation from the status quo.
We know that beauty can be sustainable, cruelty-free, non-toxic, and long-lasting — but we don’t see enough of that. Instead, we see nail polish with harmful ingredients like parabens, toluene, formaldehyde, phthalates, and animal derivatives.
Liberation Nails will be the change we wish to see in the world.
Our nail polish is 21-free, meaning there are twenty-one chemicals and additives we refuse to put in our nail products. Our Time For a Change Nail Polish Remover comes in a reusable container, and the refill comes in a recyclable glass bottle.
Did you know? We won a 2022 Beauty Innovation Award for our In Good Hands Cuticle Recovery Oil.
We invite you to innovate with us.
Isn’t it time for a change?
Did you know that Liberation Nails has a line of 21-free nail polish just for kids? Our favorite spring nail colors for kids are Kittens (pastel pink), High Spirits (sunshine yellow), and New Friend (bold teal).
Buy and save with our Big-Little Bundle. Choose one spring nail color from Liberation Nails and one from Libbi Kids to start your spring break off with some big-little bonding.
Do you want beautiful, long-lasting spring nail colors in 2023? Do you want nail polish that promises to do no harm? If you answered yes to either of these questions, it’s time to shop Liberation Nails!
]]>Next time you want a mani-pedi, bring Liberation Nails nail polish with you.
You might not have realized until this moment that you can bring your own nail polish, but most salons won’t mind. Why should they? If anything, you’re saving them time and money, and you’re sure to love the color when the manicure is done.
Don’t expect them to give you a discount on your manicure because you aren’t using their supplies. While that would be nice, you shouldn’t BYOP to save money; you should do it for your health. And who knows — maybe you’ll inspire someone else to do the same!
Some people will bring their own polish because they’re picky. There is nothing wrong with that! You’re paying for a service, and you know what you like. Be assertive and own it.
However, if you’re on the fence, several health-and-safety reasons might help tip the scale.
When you visit a nail salon, they don’t open a new nail polish bottle for each customer. That means the brush on your nails has touched several nails before yours. If you’re going to a reputable salon, the tech should cleanse your hands and the hands of every other customer. Your comfort level depends on how much you trust your tech.
If you place your faith in the wrong tech, you’re leaving yourself vulnerable to bacteria and fungi.
Most sources will tell you that nail polish isn’t microbe-friendly, meaning that bacteria probably won’t survive in the conditions most nail polish provides. However, the same sources also say that any nail polish brush encountering an unhealthy nail plate should be thrown away.
Again, it begs the question: how well do you know and trust your tech?
Some salons dilute nail polish with nail polish remover. They may do this to save money and make it last longer, or they may do it to thin out older nail polish. Whatever the reason, this practice affects the quality of the nail polish and, therefore, the quality of your manicure.
You can be sure your nail polish won’t be prone to chipping, peeling, or lifting by using a brand you trust and know hasn’t been diluted.
The non-toxic nail care trend is catching on, but, to many, it remains just that: a trend. Because of this, you’ll find many nail salons that offer “non-toxic” nail polish options. That means you may find a salon that offers 3-free, 5-free, or 10-free nail polish options — but very few are likely to have high-quality 21-free nail polish. Most will probably continue recommending the more expensive gel manicures.
If you’re spending money getting your nails done, don’t skimp on the nail polish. Make sure you have your nails done with a polish that aligns with your ideals and supports your health.
There are so many things to worry about in this life. What are we exposing ourselves to? Our loved ones? Our world?
Going to the nail salon is an opportunity to take a break, take a breath, and let someone else take care of you. Don’t give that up. Just make sure you take every precaution to ensure you have the healthiest manicure possible.
No matter your style, we have a shade for you. Looker is a classic red that never goes out of fashion. We designed 4th Dimension (purple) for those who like a bold look. If you have a more natural or minimalist style, Liberation Nails has you covered with light shades like Darling. Also, our kids’ line, Libbi Kids, is full of fun colors kids love.
Liberation Nails is free of 21 harmful substances, such as formaldehyde, phthalates, benzene, animal derivatives, synthetic fragrances, and more. Our products are vegan, cruelty-free, sustainable, and, of course, non-toxic.
Taking your own non-toxic, 21-free nail polish to the nail salon will make the experience even better. Browse our bundles (and save a bundle) by visiting our online store.
]]>If you've found this page, you care about what goes into your body and how your choices affect the environment. So do we. That’s why we created a non-toxic nail polish formula that is free of 21 harmful or synthetic chemical ingredients.
Before the FDA Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938, you could put just about anything in nail polish. In fact, some young women during the 1920s painted their nails with radioactive luminous paint—and it was considered safe.
Unfortunately, passing this little piece of legislation changed nothing. Cosmetics still don’t require prior FDA approval before hitting the shelves. To this day, they only monitor color additives. Nail polish companies and customers (as they often do) had to take health and safety into their own well-manicured hands.
The non-toxic nail care movement started with 3-free nail polish. This is nail polish made without using the three most harmful toxic ingredients: Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Formaldehyde, and Toluene.
Eventually, the number of undesirable ingredients reached ten, with multiple companies choosing to avoid the “big three,” as well as parabens, camphor, formaldehyde resin, xylene, triphenyl phosphate (TPHP), tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP), and ethyl tosylamide.
Non-toxic nail care has been moving in the right direction for a while now, but we felt that we could do better.
We knew there had to be a way to make beautiful nail polish with even fewer harmful ingredients. We excluded eleven more to make 21-free nail polish: Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK), 4-Methoxyphenol (MEHQ), Carcinogenic Mutagenic, Formaldehyde Releaser, Cyclic Silicones, Glycol Ethers of Series E, Chromium Oxide Greens, Benzene, Hydroquinone (HQ), Nonylphenol Ethoxylates, and Bismuth Oxychloride.
Here is a brief rundown of why we feel so passionately about creating safe nail care products that include none of the following:
Many of these ingredients have also been flagged as pollutants and are banned in Europe due to health and environmental concerns.
Let’s take a look at Self Soothe, a calming light green nail polish from our liberation nails collection. It includes ingredients like silica (found in sand), titanium dioxide (found naturally in plants and animals), Evening Primrose oil, Kukui seed oil, Baobab oil, Sweet Almond oil, and Violet Extract.
Even our nail polish remover is acetone-free. Instead, we use a formula that includes Frankincense oil, Abyssinian seed oil, ascorbic acid, and a vitamin blend. It even comes in a reusable dispenser.
We never want to harm our customers or the world we live in.
Liberation Nails was born from love. When founder Staci Morris’s mother was at the end of her cancer fight, she asked Staci to paint her nails. “It brought a little bit of joy to a tragic situation.”
Nail painting should be a joyful experience, but it can be difficult to relax and enjoy something so simple when you can’t be sure how your choice affects your body and the environment. We take the stress away by assuring customers that our non-toxic nail care products are safe, inclusive, cruelty-free, and sustainable. We never use animal derivatives or synthetic fragrances.
So, sit back, relax, choose your favorite 21-free nail polish shades, and enjoy the little things in life once again.
Liberation Nails creates 21-free nail polish for children and adults. Visit our store for inspiration and enjoy free shipping on orders of $75 or more.
]]>Once in a while, you may need to use acetone to get rid of something designed to last for decades in your home. When doing so, you should wear gloves and have plenty of ventilation because it is a harsh chemical.
Knowing all of this, why is acetone still recommended for routine use in nail care?
If acetone can strip paint, what is it doing to your cuticles and nails?
Acetone nail polish remover is very effective in removing polish — but it’s also effective in eliminating natural, healthy oils from your nails and skin.
Acetone nail polish remover dehydrates the skin around your nails, causing your cuticles to crack, bleed, and become susceptible to infection. It also dehydrates the nail itself, leading to brittle nails that break, crack, and peel easily.
As Our Everyday Life states in an article: “The best way to avoid acetone damage is simply not to use a product that contains it.”
If you’re still using traditional acetone nail polish remover, it’s time for a change.
Non-acetone nail polish remover feels better, smells better, and is better for you. Liberation Nails offers a nail polish remover option that contains Abyssinian oil to nourish and moisturize nails, as well as Frankincense oil, which promotes nail growth and antimicrobial protection. Our product (aptly named Time for a Change) is 21-free and vegan and comes in a reusable dispenser.
It is possible to care for your nails, overall health, and the environment by making one small change. Refills come carefully shipped in a recyclable glass bottle.
Our non-acetone nail polish remover may require a bit of extra soaking in a skin-friendly solution. Still, it is just as effective as acetone nail polish remover when removing regular nail polish. With traditional acetone nail polish, you can soak a cotton ball and immediately remove the old polish.
A gentler nail polish remover requires a gentler process.
We recommend dipping a cotton ball in our non-acetone nail polish remover and soaking each nail for approximately twenty seconds. Then, gently wipe the polish away.
Non-acetone nail polish remover won’t work for these types of manicures, but if you’re looking to commit to non-toxic nail care, you may want to rethink those treatments.
Allure details the hour-long process of removing acrylic nails at home:
Multiple sources recommend taking breaks between these kinds of manicures and pedicures because the removal process is so harsh. One dermatologist recommends two-to-three weeks between treatments. Consequences of these treatments include fungal infection, keratin granulation, and nail discoloration.
You don’t have these risks when using non-toxic nail polish and non-acetone nail polish remover.
Like most people, you’re probably looking for ways to help the environment and live a healthier lifestyle. Commitment to clean nail care is an easy choice that enables you to achieve both goals.
Be sure to try our cuticle recovery oil to boost cuticle recovery and hydration. We call it In Good Hands because, with Liberation Nails, you are.
Liberation Nails is a woman-owned company dedicated to inclusive, non-toxic, sustainable, and cruelty-free nail care. Shop our products and polishes, including our new holiday line, and start your journey to healthy nail care.
]]>The benefits of non-toxic nail care are numerous, but we’ll focus on the four big ones — nail health, mental health, physical health, and environmental health.
As dermatologists writing for the Harvard Health Blog point out, anything you put on your skin can be absorbed by the body. Nail polish, with its proximity to the delicate skin of your cuticles, is no exception.
The three main culprits concerning toxic nail polish are formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate. Formaldehyde is used as a hardener, toluene acts as a solvent, and DBT is a plasticizer. Instead of these ingredients, which are probable carcinogens, nervous system disruptors, and endocrine disruptors, respectively. Non-toxic nail polish provides a healthier alternative.
Liberation Nails chooses ingredients like ethyl acetate (also used to decaffeinate coffee beans) and acetyl tributyl (derived from citric acid). While many nail polish brands avoid the three most harmful ingredients and call themselves 3-free or 5-free, we make a point to avoid more than twenty-one toxic chemicals in our products.
We believe you can be beautiful and respect your body with 21-free nail polish.
Most of us try to be good humans, but some days it feels like an impossible task. All day, we hear:
“Be inclusive!”
“Protect the environment!”
“Don’t support sweatshops!”
“Use vegan products!”
“Don’t forget to practice self-care!”
Nail polish has the potential to contribute to all these social and economic problems. Do you know where your nail polish company stands on inclusivity? Do you know who makes the product? Is it tested on animals? Is it toxic to the environment?
At Liberation Nails, we are very clear on where we stand regarding these issues. Our products allow you to relax and practice small self-care rituals without the pressure of wondering if you’re compromising your health or contributing negatively to the environment or society. As founder Staci Morris said in an interview with USA Wire, Liberation Nails is designed for people who demand “sustainable, cruelty-free, and chemical-free products.”
One of the most immediate rewards you’ll experience when choosing non-toxic nail polish is noticeably healthier nails. While most nail polishes contain ingredients that result in dry, cracked skin and weak nails, non-toxic nail care has the opposite effect.
Nail polish has been known to cause nail fungus. Gel manicures are notorious for causing brittle, peeling nails. Dehydration is a common problem when using acetone nail polish remover.
Again, there are healthier alternatives.
Our nail polish remover uses natural ingredients like frankincense oil and Abyssinian seed oil to nourish your nails and cuticles while gently removing the polish. In an article for Nails Magazine, an industry scientist recommended looking for quick-dry drops that contain a blend of natural oils and silicones to keep nails healthy. As for nail polish, the less chemicals they have, the better.
Choose a non-toxic nail polish that skips allergens, parabens, and harmful chemicals to ensure your nails stay strong and healthy.
The Zero Waste Memoirs cites “x-free” nail polishes as some of the best for the environment, and the higher the number, the less harmful impact they will have. The same chemicals that soak into your skin will also leech into the ground and contaminate our water.
Non-toxic nail care practices eliminate this issue, returning natural ingredients to nature rather than introducing new and harmful chemicals. Liberation Nails uses refillable products and compostable materials to ensure the lowest environmental impact.
Don’t forget about the animals! Popular brands like Sally Hansen continue to test on animals in countries like China, where animal testing is required. That’s just not worth it to us. Our products will always be vegan-friendly, cruelty-free, and Leaping Bunny-certified.
Committing to non-toxic nail care is one of the best choices you can make for yourself and our planet; it’s also an easy one. Non-toxic nail products are a small investment in your health, including all the ingredients you want and none of the ones you don’t.
Choose healthier nails and a healthier lifestyle by opting for non-toxic nail care.
Our colors are vibrant, our ingredients are natural, and our mission is clear. If you’re interested in learning more about Liberation Nails and our non-toxic products for adults and children, read about us, our FAQ or contact us.
